Prince Charming: A Publicity Portrait Session | Utah Portrait Photographer

Period costumes are a powerful storytelling device. I photographed these publicity photos of Ethan in this coat in my home studio, but the principles and method could apply anywhere. (Is it just me, or does he kind of look like Kevin McKidd from Grey's Anatomy?)

BONUS: As a seamstress also, being able to touch and manipulate a well-made garment is almost as exciting as photographing it!

Technical Notes
I photographed these portraits in the same corner using two different walls and two different light sources. The main light was a single speed light in a 43-inch umbrella soft box angled straight down to the ground and placed about 3 feet to Ethan's right (camera left). I fired a second speed light into the ceiling behind me to bring up the shadows.

In the portraits with the darker background, the light reflected off the lighter gray-colored wall to the subject's left (camera right). In the portraits with the lighter background, the darker wall at the subject's right (camera left) became a negative fill to darken the shadows in an otherwise brightly lit photograph.

The Lonely Flower, with Kollene Snow | Salt Lake Conceptual Portrait Photographer

I wanted this photo shoot with Kollene Snow to illustrate that idea. Like a lonely flower that blooms, sometimes unexpected ideas lead the way to the next one. Doing so lends inspiration and  actually yields titles that resonate with me most often.  For this reason a quote from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte recently stuck in my mind. "I am no bird; no net ensnares me." I also remembered a behind the scenes YouTube video by fashion photographer Joan Allen that I found by accident years ago of a shoot using calligraphy on the skin to add a dimension of edgy elegance. Combine that with a kick I've been on about oversized objects and I knew what I wanted to do.  Months ago I draped my dress form, Maggie, with yards of purple cloth I picked up secondhand for a different photo shoot. The shoot turned out okay but didn't fully captured the potential I saw in that &quo
