Conflict of the Inner Self | salt lake conceptual portrait photographer

Mostly I sail with an even keel, adjusting my balance with the changing wind. But sometimes I just absolutely, positively get mad. It poisons my emotions like black ink, and whenever it washes over me I wonder: if the two forces could just understand each other, would there be balance? If my light side acknowledged how difficult it can be to live in the dark, and if the dark knew better the light, would there be peace? Questions like these made this photo shoot personal. It's a daily struggle: conflict of the inner self . --- The styling concept for this shoot comes from Angel Lugo, a fine art photographer here in Utah. You can see her Faceboo

"Afflicted" Model: Alicia Marie Emerson Makeup & Styling:  Alicia Marie Emerson Photography: Wendy Hurst Location: Murray City Park, Murray, Utah Where I come from the word "winter" is associated with the word "snow". Utah in winter is cold, snowy and invites skiers from around the world. Being not a skier I associate it with different qualities: hibernating trees, leafless bushes, flowerless stems and the like. Some might think of these as something to ignore until spring when everything blooms back into life; but taking up conceptual photography has changed that dreary landscape into a great source of inspiration. That doesn't mean I expected to find this kind of beauty. I had a basic idea in mind with a red cloak I made but hadn't taken adequate pictures of yet. I recruited a model and planned a photographer mentoring session for a Saturday morning. When my mentoree

Homespun Ballerina, Self Portrait | salt lake city utah conceptual portrait photographer

Do you remember being a kid and getting ideas in your head that just wouldn't go away? Me too. I went through phases. Dolphin trainer, astronaut, football player, famous actress and singer, a scientist... Being a ballerina when I grew up was another one that, obviously, I didn't pursue. I never even took a class. I didn't feel coordinated enough, skinny enough, pretty enough. It didn't seem like me. But  it was always fun to dream. I was thinking about that last night as I was putting on my pajamas, and the more I thought about it the less tired I felt. My hair was already done from earlier in the day...so at 11 PM it began. I rummaged through my fabric stash, found a silky pink wrap, cleaned out a corner in a room and set up my camera.  It might surprise you that the fabric is not actually flowy. I composited a few images of shaking it around to make one beautiful spinning dress and posed my arms and feet separately. I left the door and air intake vent in

Self Portrait: Let it Burn | salt lake conceptual portrait photographer

Andantino by Liona Boyd on Grooveshark It started with a plan. I had a model planned, the wardrobe was coordinated and I was on location when it became clear: the model thought the photo shoot was a different day. It was...defeating. Away from home but with all the supplies, I used my fallback: a self portrait. The only place I've ever done self portraits so far is at home, so trudging out to a stick-covered clearing while wrapped in fabric and carrying all my own supplies in my arms was...well, probably entertaining to those who passed by. It's okay, strangers! I brought water to douse that flame.

"Awake", with Nicole Muhlestein Brown | salt lake conceptual portrait photographer

You know that feeling of heaviness that comes after taking a long, deep nap? Waking feels like the dream. And in that dream, do you move forward or turn back? Do you venture into the great unknown or linger behind, waiting for something to happen? These are the themes I wanted to explore. Awake . Breathing (Instrumental) by Tatsu on Grooveshark Model: Nicole Muhlestein Brown Hair & Makeup: Jessica Muhlestein Brown Photo: Wendy Hurst Portrait These images came from a one-on-one photographer mentoring session I did last weekend with Jennifer Dikes, another photographer here in Utah.
