No Makeup, Still You (a series)

I don't wear makeup.

That shouldn't change whether or not you do. It's just my personal preference for myself. For some people makeup is just part of personal representation to the world, like any other basic hygiene such as deodorant or shampoo. But in my opinion, too many people require makeup to feel "accepted", by themselves or even others. They do it to fit in. I believe that using any substance or object for this purpose is proof of a deeper problem: fear. Fear of judgment. Fear of rejection. Fear of self.

With or without makeup, just be you.

This series features individuals with no makeup and no skin editing to demonstrate that even without makeup, you are still you.

Technical Stuff
Backdrop is seamless gray paper. For lighting I used my go-to setup, a main plus a fill. Both were a speed light in a 43" softbox umbrella.

Main Light: camera right, pointed down at subject at 45 degrees and feathered away from backdrop so that the edge of the softbox (the softest part of the light) would spill onto my subject's face.

Fill Light: camera left, pointed directly at subject, feathered slightly away from the backdrop to prevent spill. 1/4-1/2 power of the main light.

Settings: Most images were taken at f/7.1 at 125/s, ISO 200.
I bumped my shutter speed to 1/125s to block out any artificial studio light, and set my aperture to f/7.1. I used my f/2.8 24-70mm Tamron lens and tried to keep the zoom between 50 and 70 to compress the background.

The Lonely Flower, with Kollene Snow | Salt Lake Conceptual Portrait Photographer

Have you ever been stuck trying think of an idea, and then all of a sudden a tiny, fragile glimpse of something appears? In those moments I just want to grab it and hold on so it can't get away, but if you don't let it breathe, that poor little idea gets squished. I wanted this photo shoot with Kollene Snow to illustrate that idea. Like a lonely flower that blooms, sometimes unexpected ideas lead the way to the next one. I am no bird | salt lake city utah conceptual portrait photographer

Doing so lends inspiration and  actually yields titles that resonate with me most often.  For this reason a quote from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte recently stuck in my mind. "I am no bird; no net ensnares me." I also remembered a behind the scenes YouTube video by fashion photographer Joan Allen that I found by accident years ago of a shoot using calligraphy on the skin to add a dimension of edgy elegance. Combine that with a kick I've been on about oversized objects and I knew what I wanted to do.  Months ago I draped my dress form, Maggie, with yards of purple cloth I picked up secondhand for a different photo shoot. The shoot turned out okay but didn't fully captured the potential I saw in that &quo
