Greenhouse Portrait Session with Emily Lauren

"I have 6 tattoos. My sixth tattoo is the antler with a blue ribbon on my forearm. I got it early this year the day after my grandpa passed away. Due to my parent's divorce my mom, siblings and I spent most of my childhood living with my grandparents. My grandpa became such a strong father figure to me because I only got to see my dad every other weekend. For years on end my grandpa would chat with my sister and I as we were getting ready for school in the mornings. Every morning when we were starting to do our hair he'd get super excited telling us he knew just the thing for our hair. He'd jump up and run to his room and come back with a small antler that had a blue ribbon tied around it and tell us it was the perfect accessory and that no one in school would have one like it. Every morning my sister and I would squeal and giggle and tell him how silly it was and he'd proceed to try and find the perfect spot in our hair for it. Losing him is one of the greatest and most painful losses I've ever felt. The night he passed away, all I could think about was how badly I wished I'd have worn the silly antler just once. I woke up the next morning set on getting the tattoo and called shop after shop until I found one with open books." -Emily Lauren @emily_lauren_model

The Lonely Flower, with Kollene Snow | Salt Lake Conceptual Portrait Photographer

Have you ever been stuck trying think of an idea, and then all of a sudden a tiny, fragile glimpse of something appears? In those moments I just want to grab it and hold on so it can't get away, but if you don't let it breathe, that poor little idea gets squished. I wanted this photo shoot with Kollene Snow to illustrate that idea. Like a lonely flower that blooms, sometimes unexpected ideas lead the way to the next one. I am no bird | salt lake city utah conceptual portrait photographer

Doing so lends inspiration and  actually yields titles that resonate with me most often.  For this reason a quote from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte recently stuck in my mind. "I am no bird; no net ensnares me." I also remembered a behind the scenes YouTube video by fashion photographer Joan Allen that I found by accident years ago of a shoot using calligraphy on the skin to add a dimension of edgy elegance. Combine that with a kick I've been on about oversized objects and I knew what I wanted to do.  Months ago I draped my dress form, Maggie, with yards of purple cloth I picked up secondhand for a different photo shoot. The shoot turned out okay but didn't fully captured the potential I saw in that &quo
