[Week 12/52] Face Paint & Flour | salt lake city utah conceptual portrait photographer

I've had face paint burning a hole in my bathroom drawer for years and never took the opportunity to take it out. What if it looked ridiculous, I thought. What if I couldn't make it look good? And then one day I decided I didn't care and recruited Melissa and Maren to model it for me. No story ahead of time, no real plan, we just met at a local trailhead and ran around smearing face paint, throwing flour into the air and dashing across a shady field with different colored fabrics--which made me absolutely believe our shoot together was meant to be. Without prior discussion, I simply asked each of them to wear a dress and I would bring some fabric to meld into their dress. Cross my heart, I didn't change the shade of the blue in Melissa's dress to match my fabric; the colors were identical. I also brought a black, stretchy cut of lacy fabric--and Maren wore black. See? Meant to be.

Whenever I do a photo shoot I try really hard to go in with intent and a story. Not so with this shoot, and I still don't know what to make of it. It felt really good to just go out and have fun in a forest. Even now I don't really have a story of these images, they were just fun to make. Take the pressure off sometime, it feels wonderful!

The Lonely Flower, with Kollene Snow | Salt Lake Conceptual Portrait Photographer

Have you ever been stuck trying think of an idea, and then all of a sudden a tiny, fragile glimpse of something appears? In those moments I just want to grab it and hold on so it can't get away, but if you don't let it breathe, that poor little idea gets squished. I wanted this photo shoot with Kollene Snow to illustrate that idea. Like a lonely flower that blooms, sometimes unexpected ideas lead the way to the next one. I am no bird | salt lake city utah conceptual portrait photographer

Doing so lends inspiration and  actually yields titles that resonate with me most often.  For this reason a quote from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte recently stuck in my mind. "I am no bird; no net ensnares me." I also remembered a behind the scenes YouTube video by fashion photographer Joan Allen that I found by accident years ago of a shoot using calligraphy on the skin to add a dimension of edgy elegance. Combine that with a kick I've been on about oversized objects and I knew what I wanted to do.  Months ago I draped my dress form, Maggie, with yards of purple cloth I picked up secondhand for a different photo shoot. The shoot turned out okay but didn't fully captured the potential I saw in that &quo
