#nonsenseinspires week 3: words without words

It's happened to you. That face of that person you just met or last saw years ago is clear in your mind and yet somehow their name eludes you, dangling on a string just out of reach by a cunning, imaginary hand. Or maybe for you it's a song lyric, or a musical tune stuck in your mind but one you just can't place--or erase. See it as a blessing rather than a curse. Nonsense has come knocking.

Spotting the Nonsense
What are those fragmented lyrics you recall? What memories do you associate with that person's familiar face? What images do they conjure? What do those images make you recall?

How to Use It
Now add something ridiculous. Something that makes you say, "that can't happen." Maybe the last time you saw that person you were in an office at work--and suddenly there was an explosion and you heroically shoved them out of harm's way. Maybe you walked in slow and glorious motion away from the flames, unfazed and unharmed. Maybe the credits rolled to your favorite tune. Take it wherever you want.

It Works for Me
This series might not be as exciting as all that, but I did glean some inspiration from some long-lost fragments of memorized poetry from authors Charlotte Bronte and Emily Dickinson. (Images originally published in 2015.) I took the phrases I remembered and interpreted them artistically with calligraphy written on the models themselves. I have no training in calligraphy nor do I own any fancy pens, but I did have access to my memory of cursive and a Sharpie. Throw in a few yards of fabric from my stash and suddenly I had something special (even if it was only special to me).

The Lonely Flower, with Kollene Snow | Salt Lake Conceptual Portrait Photographer

Have you ever been stuck trying think of an idea, and then all of a sudden a tiny, fragile glimpse of something appears? In those moments I just want to grab it and hold on so it can't get away, but if you don't let it breathe, that poor little idea gets squished. I wanted this photo shoot with Kollene Snow to illustrate that idea. Like a lonely flower that blooms, sometimes unexpected ideas lead the way to the next one. Doing so lends inspiration and  actually yields titles that resonate with me most often.  For this reason a quote from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte recently stuck in my mind. "I am no bird; no net ensnares me." I also remembered a behind the scenes YouTube video by fashion photographer Joan Allen that I found by accident years ago of a shoot using calligraphy on the skin to add a dimension of edgy elegance. Combine that with a kick I've been on about oversized objects and I knew what I wanted to do.  Months ago I draped my dress form, Maggie, with yards of purple cloth I picked up secondhand for a different photo shoot. The shoot turned out okay but didn't fully captured the potential I saw in that &quo
